Spice Bonanza, Sauce Blowout at Doomed World Market

Thursday, 15 Jan 2009

For those of you who haven’t heard the sad news:  Cost Plus World Market is closing all of its Minnesota stores.  I stopped by the Roseville location looking for deals, and sure enough, the Storewide Inventory Blowout was in full effect.  Just about everything was at least 10 percent off or more, from gourmet foods to kitchen gear.  I was a little surprised the prices weren’t reduced even more, and things were already starting to look picked over.

I didn’t have much time, so I flew through the aisles in search of bargains.  I felt like I was on that old game show Supermarket Sweep.  I used this opportunity to stock up on spices, sauces and special pastas, and a bunch of Pellegrino.  In addition to the paprika, vanilla and family-size jar of capers (a special weakness of mine) you see above, I also scored some fleur de sel, herbes de Provence, whole vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks, coconut milk, orange marmalade, strawberry jam, and various Asian cooking sauces such as Thai chili.  I can never find pappardelle in the grocery store, so I built up my stash.  Many types of bottled water, sodas, coffee (beans and ground) and tea were all on sale, too.  Also good olive oils and balsamic vinegars, and my beloved sesame oil – it adds so much flavor!

I asked an employee how long they expected to stay open and they said they hadn’t been informed yet, but their guess was 8-12 weeks.  The deals will probably just get better, but seems like a lot of the good stuff will be gone in no time at this rate.

World Market is one of those stores I just love to go into.  The music is fun and makes you think you’re somewhere tropical, the displays are colorful and appealing and the gourmet food section usually inspires me to try something new. I’m gonna miss this place, but in the meantime, I managed to bring half the store home with me.
