Fred’s Icy Adventures: Temporary Dog Boots

This morning when it was “10 degrees, feels like -2,” our Boston terrier Fred had an awfully tough time staying outside long enough to do his business. There’s no patch of ground not covered by snow, except of course for the icy, salty sidewalk. Poor little dude — he kept picking up his feet and you could tell the ice and snow were hurting his paws more and more the longer we stayed out. We ordered him some fleece-lined waterproof doggie boots, but they’re still on the way from Canada. So, until they get here, we had to figure out something else. I MacGyvered up this solution: an athletic sock, a sandwich bag and an elastic ponytail holder for each paw.

First problem: holding him still for long enough to get them on. Once they were on, the challenge was to keep him from chewing them off. I carried him outside and turned him loose. It took a few minutes for him to figure out he could walk on them. Then he lost a boot. But it worked — he stayed outside long enough to do what he needed to do. What a production just to get the little mutt to poop. The Muttluks can’t get here soon enough.

Not too happy about this. And we've lost a boot.

Play time back inside where it's warm.

You're gonna have to play with me for a really long time to make up for those boots.

Our beagle Fred, feels your Fred’s pain…
“Stay Tough!”, he just barked.
Too cute!! I miss Fred.
Awww he is too cute! Great idea! We’ll have to try that with our beagle. He is so spoiled, he hates getting his paws wet. lol! I love your Fred’s sweater!
